Eliminate Your Desire to Have an Adult Tantrum About Marketing
One of my all-time favorite movie scenes is from the 80s summer camp spoof “Wet Hot American Summer.” In the scene, counselor Andy (Paul Rudd) throws an absolute fit when he is commanded by his boss, Beth (Janeane Garofalo), to clean up the dishes she caught him intentionally swatting onto the floor.
BETH
Andy, are you gonna clean that up?
ANDY
Oh… yeah… I will. Um… I just got…
I don’t have time right now.
BETH
Clean it up and come to my office
for the meeting.
ANDY
But I gotta… [makes face]
BETH
[makes face back]
While rolling his eyes and half-heartedly cleaning up the mess, he goes limp, dragging his feet with annoyance and lifting each piece with a heaving sigh. Paul Rudd’s physical comedy embodies exasperation. No human being has been more irritated than this.
For years, my friends and I began identifying at times with Andy’s almost-near inability to deal, and we would refer to our adult tantrums as “Rudding.” If you find yourself turning into a wet noodle, heaving an inward (or outward) sigh, and doing something that you’d rather not do, you’re Rudding.
Does Marketing Make You Start Rudding?
If your organization isn’t a marketing business, you may not have the time, knowledge, or interest to do it yourself. There is so much to know how to do—design ads and place them, write and shoot commercials, build and maintain your website, and keep up with the latest social media trends.
Does learning about how to make TikToks make you want to do this?
Rudding without actually being Paul Rudd is a bad look. It’s time to get help.
