Writing is easy. Writing well is hard (and a bit subjective).

There are bazillions of blogs that offer tips and tricks and rules and advice on breaking those rules and examples of what to do and what not to do. This is not that kind of blog. Here, we’re going to break down the Mad Genius method. It’s a relatively simple way to collect your thoughts and produce solid written content.

Study Up

Ever speak with a know-it-all? It’s not great. Especially when said smarty-pants turns out to be wrong about most of the nonsense that spews from their mouth hole. Don’t be that guy. Or gal. Or non-binary person.

As a writer, you’re likely pretty smart when it comes to word herding. However, you may not know much about everything else in the world. What’s an ignorant wordsmith to do? Learn. Research. Get you some education.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Thankfully, the internet is chock-full of knowledge. You’ll have to separate the true stuff from the nonsense, but it’s possible. You could also try interviewing an expert, reviewing documentation and data at, say, the library, or even going back to school, studying for several years, and becoming an expert yourself.

We recommend the internet.

Point is: know what you’re talking about before you orate. (That’s not just good writing advice, so feel free to apply whenever and wherever.)

Hustle to the Message

No need to spend five thousand words setting up a point. Just get to it. Most readers will thank you for not using three hundred and twenty words when thirty-two will do.

Improve the Copy

Editing is essential. Read through your work and ensure that you’re using the proper words in suitable places. Check your grammar, take a hard look at your tone of voice, and be certain that the point you’re making comes through crystal clear.

It’s important to note that editing and writing are two entirely different skill sets. If you have a friend or colleague you can rely on to make sure you’ve put commas in the right places or avoided an embarrassing misspelling, this is the time to tap them in.

Take One More Look

We know, you already did the whole editing thing. Trust us and take another glance at your work, and if you have the time, take a break between the last step and this one.

Because you’re a super-duper littérateur, you’re not likely to find any errors. You may, however, find tweaks that bring your writing more in-line with the tone or message you were shooting for in the first place. Take the time to make this perfect. Hopefully, people are going to read these words, and you want to avoid looking benighted.

And that’s it! Congratulations, you’re now equipped with everything you need to write like an absolute pro. Study up, hustle to the message, improve the copy, and take one more look. When you’re collecting your thoughts into a word party, just remember Mad Genius and our S-H-I-T method.

Wait…

Know what? On second thought, forget all that. Just give us a call and let us throw some words together for you. They’ll be great. We promise.
