Q&A

Q&A

  • Who is your favorite real-life genius? Why?

The late poet Mary Oliver. Her poems are notably unadorned and accessible to everyone, yet every verse is rich with insight. She was a devout disciple of nature and had a mischievous sense of humor. Her work is a testimony to the wisdom that comes with spending time in nature with its inhabitants, whose voices she often used to harpoon the habits and concerns of humans.

  • Tell us about a place you visited and something you loved about it.

Monhegan Island, Maine. It's 10 miles off the coast, only a mile wide and two miles long, and the ferry ride there is a Dramamine-fueled adventure on a fair day. It’s been an artists' colony since the mid-19th century, beginning with painters of the Hudson River School and later artists like Robert Henri, Edward Hopper, and Andrew Wyeth. And it’s hard not to love a place that inspired so many works of art. I think part of the allure is how foreign the cold and rugged North Atlantic coast is to the flat, endless landscape of the Mississippi Delta, where I was born and raised.

  • What is the single greatest creative work you’ve ever experienced?

Cirque du Soleil’s presentation of “Alegria,” when it was in residency at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi. For me, those performances felt like the pinnacle of so many artistic and athletic endeavors working seamlessly together to astonish and inspire an audience. It was a breathtaking thing to witness.
